Method

Normative standard.

Claims used

  • SC 1.4.10 Reflow: content should be available without two-dimensional scrolling at the equivalent of 320 CSS px.
  • SC 1.4.13: hover- or focus-triggered content must be dismissible, hoverable, and persistent.
  • SC 2.1.1: all functionality must be operable through a keyboard.
  • SC 2.3.3: interaction-triggered motion animation must be disableable.
  • SC 2.5.8: pointer targets should meet a minimum 24 × 24 CSS px size.
  • SC 4.1.3: status messages must be programmatically identifiable without receiving focus.

Extracted principles

  • Motion should be opt-inConditionally supported

Define animation only inside prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference, so newly added components are static by default.

  • An action should confirm its result at the triggering control, without shifting the layout, and announce the outcome to assistive technology.

  • Information shown on hover must also be available through keyboard focus, remain dismissible, and stay open when the pointer moves onto it.

  • Pointer and touch targets should be at least 24 × 24 px because selection time depends on target size and distance.

  • Content should remain intact at 320 CSS px without page-level two-dimensional scrolling, even when experimental visual effects are enabled.
